In your browser's IndexedDB — the same local storage that your browser uses for offline web apps. Squirrel has no server to send them to. When you're offline, everything works identically.
This also means each browser is its own separate store. Bookmarks saved in Chrome are not visible in Firefox, and vice versa.
Free users: your bookmarks will be gone. This is the main reason to upgrade — Premium's auto-backup writes a copy outside the browser every 30 minutes, so clearing browser data doesn't lose anything.
Even on the free tier, you can manually backup to a file (Menu → Backup to File) and restore at any time. We recommend doing this regularly.
It uses your browser's File System Access API to write a backup JSON file directly to a folder you choose on your computer — a folder that can be inside OneDrive, Dropbox, or Google Drive.

Setting it as the new tab page (what opens on Ctrl+T) requires a browser extension due to browser security restrictions — that's not something Squirrel can do as a website alone.
